Un autre système de sélection des couleurs, qui est plus fréquemment utilisé par les professionnels des arts graphiques, est le nuancier Pantone. Ce système dénommé «Pantone Matching System» (ou PMS color) a été développé par la société Pantone. Il ne s'agit pas d'un modèle au sens mathématique du terme mais d'une table de référence comportant 747 couleurs identifiées par un numéro (par exemple, le bleu du logo des Facultés porte le numéro 279). Chacune des couleurs référencées correspond à un mélange déterminé d'encres de base. Le principal avantage du choix Pantone réside dans le fait que les couleurs sont préfabriquées, ce qui évite des surprises lors de l'impression.
